What is a Doula?

In literature, the Doula have crossed times and borders and are found in many cultures around the world. Doula, "femme qui aide", godsib, ... they have different names but they all do the same job: taking care of women. Doula is a profession as old as the world, because since the beginning of time, giving birth is not done alone but between women.

Generations ago, the pregnant women were very much surrounded: mother, grandmother, sister, aunt .... There was no lack of female figures and the woman thus had resource persons to turn to for information or reassurance.

The doula offers this presence to today's pregnant women. The Doula is a woman professionally trained in pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. She has acquired knowledge in pain management, childbirth physiology, breastfeeding, ... and has a deep desire to be of service to other women with the precious teaching she has received.

Before, during and after the birth, the doula is a resource person who accompanies future and new parents in a non-medical way, thanks to practical, physical, informative and emotional support. This support can be ongoing throughout the perinatal period (i.e., before, during, and after childbirth), or only for prenatal or postnatal support. As the support can continue for several months after the birth, the Doula offers parents the stability of her commitment as well as appropriate support at each stage of parenthood.

The Doula is a common thread for pregnant women in particular, but also for the couple, a trusted refuge, a person who can be counted on, who knows how to provide relief and a feeling of security.

The doula has the conviction that the (future) parents are the ones who can best know what is good for them and their child, and she supports the parents in their journey and in the search for their truth.

This approach allows new parents to approach the arrival of their baby with more calm, empathy and serenity, and to find their parenthood with more ease and confidence.

The Doula does not provide medical care or diagnoses and does not replace appropriate medical care. Her work is combined with the various health professionals and in particular the midwives, in the reciprocal respect of their competences. A Doula's support is complementary to that of midwives and doctors, and she works to create a link between all medical and social stakeholders.

Each Doula practices according to her sensitivity, her status and her limits. There is no single model of doula, but women who are committed, each in their own way, working together for the respect, trust and self-reliance of the people they accompany.

What type of Doula am I?

Passionate about the world of perinatal care, I have a deep appreciation for the infinite strength of women and the intelligence of their bodies. I have total confidence in their ability to give birth and to take care of their babies. Women know how to give birth and babies know how to be born. Women know what is right for them and for the birth of their child. And I like to transmit these convictions to them, so that they can go to the end of what they want to achieve.

Sharing this guidance with women is a deep calling in my heart, one that has resonated for a long time, long before I myself became a mother.

Birth is a precious and sacred moment that must be respected. I became a Doula so that women could give birth and live their pregnancies freely, so that they could choose what best corresponds to their values, so that they could live fully this so important and sacred stage in their lives, but also, to put the birth in the hands of the parents.

Passionate about natural medicines and many other techniques / approaches around the woman and motherhood, I offer a support which subtly combines Ayurveda, Yoga, Spinning Babies, De Gasquet, Rebozo, etc ... All these facets allow me to propose many tools to accompany women to give birth to their baby but also to prepare themselves to their own birth as a Mom.

Being well surrounded during this unique and delicate phase of life is precious, and I would be honored to be there for you.

Benefits of a Doula during childbirth

The presence of a Doula during labor and delivery would allow to:

  • reduce the duration of contractions

  • reduce the need for medication and epidurals

  • reduce complications

  • reduce the use of oxytocin (to stimulate uterine contractions)

  • reduce the number of births by forceps or vacuum, and cesarean section

  • promote the awakening of newborns and promotes latching

  • promote successful breastfeeding and longer breastfeeding

  • strengthen the couple's relationship

  • increase self-confidence

  • decrease maternal anxiety

  • reduce the risk of postpartum depression

Some key figures:

  • 50% decrease in the rate of caesarean sections

  • 40% reduction in the use of oxytocin

  • 40% reduction in the use of forceps

  • 30% reduction in the use of analgesics

  • 25% reduction in labor time during delivery

  • 60% reduction in the demand for epidurals

Postnatal support

If the birth of a child is an infinite happiness, it is important to realize that being a parent is learned, and that being accompanied with kindness could prove to be invaluable to advance in the parenthood which is appropriate for you and your baby.

The weeks following childbirth are often an exhausting time for new parents. Many points of reference have to be reinvented. Between the fatigue, the hormones, the pains, the advice, this delicate period can be destabilizing.

My role will be to facilitate your entry into the world of motherhood/parenthood with a multidisciplinary support so that you can find your own path, and make informed choices and take your own decisions, without incitement or judgment on the different possibilities available to you. I will also help you set up a calm and secure parenting environment according to your desires, providing emotional, physical, informational and practical support from the moment you enter motherhood or go home.
